Applied’s core polymer technology is clear and colorless polyimides. Applied specializes in three varieties of colorless polyimides that can be tailored to meet demanding applications in display applications, space structures, thermal insulation, electrical insulators, industrial tapes, and advanced composites.
CP1 provides superior physical and electrical properties over a wide temperature range and in a number of harsh environments. This fluorinated polyimide may be dissolved readily in a number of solvents for use in various applications such as castings and coatings, including MIBK, DMF, THF, and others.
Competing polyimide materials have less UV resistance and are not as transparent as CP1. CP1 is superior for long-duration, space-based applications where transparency is needed for functionality. CP1 has been tested and is rated for a 10-year life in geosynchronous earth orbit (GEO).
For applications requiring transparency, other polyimides absorb too much solar energy. Materials that do have similar transparency to CP1 degrade more rapidly in the harsh environment of space.
CORIN® XLS Polyimide combines polyimide and nanocomposite technologies to deliver unsurpassed levels of optical clarity, oxidative stability, and stability to solar radiation. CORIN® XLS Polyimide received a prestigious R&D 100 Award in 2008, recognizing it as one of the most important inventions of the year.
CORIN® XLS Polyimide is a fluorinated polyimide nanocomposite that offers the highest atomic oxygen (AO) durability and highest light transmission of all the NeXolve colorless polyimides, making it an ideal lightweight substitute material for glass used in space PV arrays in low earth orbit (LEO).
CORIN® XLS Polyimide exhibits a glass transition temperature in excess of 250°C and can be used as a replacement for glass substrates in display applications.
CORIN® XLS Polyimide can be processed with organic solvents for spray, dip, or casting applications.
Novaclear® Polyimide is a colorless polyimide with a higher temperature stability than Applied’s CP1 Polyimide, exhibiting a glass transition temperature exceeding 330°C.
NovaClear® Polyimide is a transparent, colorless polyimide with temperature durability comparable to many traditional amber polyimides.
NovaClear® has a low yellowness index and high Tg which make this material suitable for use in display applications with high temperatures. It is available as a film, liquid resin, or raw polymer powder.
Liquid NovaClear® resin can be direct coated onto many substrates; however, unlike traditional polyimide resins, no high temperature cure is required for this material. NovaClear® can be custom formulated with pigments, dyes, and many other additive chemistries to meet the needs of many applications.
